Welcome to the Langley Rugby Club website

Rugby Union is one of the fastest growing sports for both men and women in the world. The Langley Rugby Club provides teams for men at the first and second division levels, and for young men at U-19 and U-16. The Rugby Club takes pride in our Mini non contact rugby program. This program has been especially designed for both boys and girls from Kindergarten to Grade 7. The program introduces the sport to our youth in a safe and fun way. This year we are also happy to announce a girls youth team.

Mini Rugby vs. Abbotsford

Langley Ruggers Washed Out
It was an uphill battle for the LRC 2nd division team from the first whistle, Abbotsford RFC, undefeated and first in the league came out strong pushing Langley back and touching the ball down for their first converted try of the day at the 10 minute mark. And they kept that pressure up scoring two more times within seven minutes. But Langley was not to be denied and Jason Warnick was able to crash his way through the centers to score for Langley with less than 20 minutes remaining in the half, try converted by Gary Ewasiuk. Unfortunately Abbotsford was able to put a stop to Langley's momentum when they intercepted a pass and ran it in for one more try to end the half.

Langley went into the second half with strong play and determined to close the 24-7 gap, Abbotsford scored first, but Langley was not discouraged coming back minutes later with Jason Warnick's second try generated from a Langley scrum on the 5 metre line. Langley continued to pressure the Abbotsford ruggers with Steve Marce setting up Matt Wood on the blindside, the winger was able to walk through the Abby defense unopposed. The try was converted by Ewasiuk. Unfortunately Langley hurt their own cause giving up another 6 points in penalty kicks and one more converted try from Abbotsford left Langley with precious little time to mount an offense. That did not stop them from trying, though, and managed to put up another 5 points with a try from Gary Ewasiuk. The final score on the day was 42-24 in favour of Abbotsford, but that score does not reflect the close feeling of the game and the strong play from Langley, who did well to keep the game within reach against an Abbotsford side that has posted 100+ point victories this season.

In first division play it looked like the Abbotsford side was coming out as strong as their second division team, scoring in the first 2 minutes of play on a 5 metre line out. The Abby try appeared to light a fire in the heart of the Langley ruggers, putting pressure on Abbotsford and keeping possession of the ball. Strong play resulted in a penalty successfully kicked for 3 points by Patrick Vaydo and a try by Kolby Brezden less than three minutes later, converted by Vaydo. Going into the second half with a 10-5 advantage victory looked to be within reach for the Langley side, but play collapsed in the pouring rain and Langley began to give up ground to Abbotsford with knocked on balls and missed tackles. Injuries caused Langley to make substitutions and reshuffle their back line and Abbotsford was able to put up 13 more points with a converted try and two successful penalty kicks. Applying great pressure on the Abbotsford defense in the last 10 minutes of play Langley was still held to no points in the second half, losing the match 18-10

This Saturday will be the final game of this half of the season before breaking for winter. Langley will face off against the Surrey Beavers at Sullivan Park starting at 1pm. The Langley Rugby Club will also be collecting donations for the Food Bank over the weekend; donations can be made at the game on Saturday or at the Langley Rugby Clubhouse on Sunday after 2pm during the Grey Cup.

LRC Near Perfect Start
Rugby has started again in Langley and since the season opened in September the Langley Rugby Club's Senior Men's 1st and 2nd Division teams have attained 7-1-0 records and second place in their divisions. This past weekend saw Langley in action against the Vancouver Scribes RFC, the Scribes having posted only one win between both of their teams, were possibly taken too lightly by the Langley sides that saw many changes due to absences and injuries. Scribes opened the scoring early in the second division match with 3 points on a penalty kick at the 22 meter line in front of the posts, this seemed to be the catalyst that woke up the Langley side as they came back soon after with a try from prop Corey Taillefer, stretching over the try line with a man hanging off of him. Langley kept picking up their pace adding two more trys before the half ended, both scored by fly-half Gary Ewasiuk, with the first made to look easy as he effortlessly stepped through the Scribes' defense.

Langley saw strong defensive play from Travis Rockson to keep the hard running Scribes from crossing the try line. The second half was a hard fought battle between the two sides as play became more organized and the pace quickened. Langley's Tim Costello made a hard run in for a try that was called back when it was knocked on in the end zone. Langley recovered quickly with great ball movement to Sean Messenger, in his first game back after 6 weeks abroad, setting up new player Ryan Angeltvedt, in the corner for the last score of the game. Gary Ewasiuk successfully kicked to convert two of the four trys for a Langley victory and a final score of 24-3.

In first division action Langley saw some changes in its roster with several players injured or away, but was still able to come away with the lead in the first half of play. Jon Bright opened the scoring touching the ball down for a try directly between the posts, successfully converted by Patrick Vaydo. The first half saw two more trys scored by Langley. Noel Maher, on left wing, put the ball down in the corner in a perfectly executed back play, the convert by Vaydo sliced barely wide of the posts. It was déjà vu for the Langley fans minutes later as Maher scored a nearly identical try, this time the convert by Vaydo was good. The Scribes fought hard and were able to push Langley back scoring one unconverted try before the half ended. The second half saw more back and forth play as the teams pressured each other for points until Langley broke away and again dominated the play. The Scribes were able to score one converted try, but it wasn't enough as Langley put up points with two successful penalty kicks by Vaydo and then a try by club president Stu Morrison along the left sidelines, which was converted by Vaydo. The final score was a 32-12 victory for Langley.

Both Langley teams were able to overcome play that was disorganized at times to claim hard fought victories, but this weekend they will need to be perfect from the start if they hope to beat the league leading undefeated Abbotsford RFC. Games kick off at Langley at 1pm on Saturday, November 21st.
